UBC Faculty Opportunity: Join the Faculty Research Awards Committee (Apply by Aug 17)

July 2, 2026

The Office of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI) invites expressions of interest from faculty at both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses to serve on the Faculty Research Awards Committee (FRAC), for a three-year term.

FRAC operates within the broader institutional research awards ecosystem and plays a key role in supporting and celebrating research excellence at UBC by providing peer review and adjudication for institutional research awards. Committee members contribute disciplinary expertise, sound judgment, and a commitment to equitable and rigorous evaluation.

Why serve on the FRAC?

This valuable service role is an excellent opportunity to be involved with research recognition at the institutional level, and to contribute to celebrating the achievements of UBC colleagues across disciplines and campuses.

Scope of Duties

The Faculty Research Awards Committee members contribute to:

  • Recognizing and honouring excellence in research through the adjudication of UBC’s faculty research awards.
  • Reviewing and ranking nominations and recommending recipients to the Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI).
  • Acting as champions for awards and nomination in their home unit and more widely.
  • On occasion, providing input on internal award outcomes, trends, and gaps to inform the institutional strategy.

Commitment

Members are expected to:

  • Serve a term of 3 years, beginning September 1, 2026
  • Participate in an orientation session, typically in October
  • Review nomination packages and provide rankings of nominees (approximately 60-70 across 6-9 awards), typically mid-December to mid-January
  • Attend 2 adjudication meetings to select award recipients, typically in late January and early February

Eligibility and Experience

  • Open to tenured research faculty across all disciplines and both campuses.
  • While prior experience with external research awards nominations or adjudication is an asset, it is not required.
  • We particularly encourage expressions of interest from faculty who:
  • Represent diverse disciplines, career stages, and lived experiences
  • Bring thoughtful perspectives on equity, diversity, and inclusion in research recognition
  • Are committed to strengthening UBC’s culture of research excellence

How to Express Interest

Interested faculty are asked to submit:

  • A brief statement of interest (max. 1 page), outlining relevant experience and motivation
  • A current UBC CV

Deadline: August 17, 2026

Submit to: Christine Humphries (christine.humphries@ubc.ca), Director, Office of Research Prizes and Awards. Questions are also welcome.

Selection Process

Expressions of interest will be reviewed by the Chair of the FRAC and the Associate Vice-President, Research & Innovation. In addition to individual qualifications, consideration will be given to building a balanced and effective Committee, aligned with institutional priorities.
