UBC Faculty Opportunity: Join the Institutional Council for Research Prizes (Apply by June 30)

May 28, 2026

The Office of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI) invites expressions of interest from faculty at both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses to serve on the Institutional Council for Research Prizes and Awards (ICRPA) for a three-year term.

The ICRPA provides strategic leadership and institutional oversight for UBC’s research prizes and awards ecosystem. These honours play a critical role in strengthening UBC’s global research reputation, attracting partners and funding, and supporting the recruitment and retention of world-leading scholars. The Council works to advance a coordinated, institution-wide culture of nomination, recognition, and celebration.

Why serve on the ICRPA?

Members help shape UBC’s research recognition strategy, influencing how excellence is identified, supported, and celebrated across the institution. This is an opportunity to contribute to institutional priorities, elevate colleagues, and help position UBC researchers for success on national and global stages.

Scope of Duties

Council members contribute to:

  • Advising on the institutional awards and prizes strategy
  • Fostering the development of an awards ecosystem that provides a strategic mix of internal awards and facilitates the success of UBC faculty in national and international award competitions
  • Recommending best practices for nominations, adjudication, and recognition processes across the University, including embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) principles into all processes
  • Promoting a culture of celebration, recognition, and “giving back” in the UBC research community, in which award recipients actively contribute to nomination and mentorship activities
  • Providing institutional visibility, communication, and leadership to foster proactive nomination activity across departments, schools, Faculties, and central units

Commitment

Members are expected to:

  • Serve a three-year term beginning July 1, 2026 (with the possibility of renewal)
  • Actively participate in 1-2 meetings per year (virtual or hybrid)
  • Contribute between meetings, as appropriate, to consultations or adjudication activities

Eligibility and Experience

  • Tenured research faculty (from any discipline and either campus)
  • Recipient of UBC, national or international research award(s)
  • A record of mentoring and supporting peers in awards and recognition pathways (i.e., as evidenced by experience in award nomination and adjudication)
  • Brings a diversity of disciplinary, methodological, and lived perspectives to the council

How to Express Interest

Interested faculty are asked to submit:

  • A brief statement of interest (max. 1 page), outlining relevant experience and motivation
  • A current UBC CV

Deadline: June 30, 2026

Submit to: Christine Humphries (christine.humphries@ubc.ca). Questions are also welcome.

Selection Process

Expressions of interest will be reviewed by the Chair of the ICRPA and the Associate Vice-President, Research & Innovation. In addition to individual qualifications, consideration will be given to building a balanced and effective Council, aligned with institutional priorities.
