The Pediatric Cancer Research Award has two grant streams, but UBC is invited to nominate a single* (1) candidate for this award. As such, candidates are required to indicate their preferred stream – V Scholar (Early Career) or Translational.

Translational Stream

  • Work is on pediatric cancer(s)
  • Work is on pediatric cancer(s)
  • Within 5 years of first full-time appointment
  • No career stage limitation
  • No previous grant >750k in direct funding
  • No previous funding limitations
  • Not previously held >1m in total grant funding
  • Full range of projects, from lab-based to translational*
  • Must relate to the field of translational medicine

*Research areas not included this scope for any grant type are epidemiology, behavioural science, and health services research.

  • No Indirect costs
  • Up to 10% Indirect costs

•             UBC internal selection deadline: April 30, 2025 (5pm)

•             Sponsor nomination deadline: May 7, 2025 (2pm)

•             Full application deadline: June 5, 2025 (2pm)

Interested candidates should submit the following items by the internal selection deadline of April 30 to kevin.mccartney@ubc.ca:

1)            Identify intended program: V Scholar or Translational

2)            UBC CV

3)            Draft recommendation letter (3 pages max), with confirmation that this has been vetted by your Department Head, addressing: 

  •              Why you should be selected
  •             Institutional resources that will be available to you
  •             Overview of the mentoring plan that will be available to you (V Scholar only)
  •             If the nature of the research is bench to bedside with patient contact, describe how patient advocacy/communication will be or has been incorporated into your training
  •             If the nature of the research is basic and/or translational science, describe how science communication with diverse audiences will be or has been incorporated into your training

4)            Summary of research proposal (1 page max)

Applicants to UBC's internal competition will be evaluated by senior scientists to select UBC's sole nominee.

*In 2025, the sponsor is allowing UBC to nominate a second candidate for an "All-Star" grant. Only those who have previously won and completed a V Foundation grant/award are eligible for "All-Star" grants. Please contact ORPA (Kevin McCartney) if you are considering nomination as an "All-Star."
