UBC faculty appointed to Order of Canada include Associate Vice-President, Research & Innovation, Dr. Helen Burt, and Dr. Daniel Heath Justice

On December 30, 2020, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, announced 61 new appointments to the Order of Canada. 

The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours. Its Companions, Officers and Members take to heart the motto of the Order: DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM ("They desire a better country").

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. 

The new list includes 1 Companion (C.C.), 13 Officers (O.C.) and 47 Members (C.M.). Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a future date.

These new appointments include current, emeritus and former UBC faculty members. Congratulations to all new appointees.

Dr. Helen M. Burt, O.C. (Associate Vice-President, Research & Innovation and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences)
For her life-altering research on drug delivery systems, for her leadership at the University of British Columbia and for her community engagement.

Dr. Daniel Heath Justice, O.C. (Faculty of Arts)
For his prolific contributions to the field of contemporary Indigenous studies in Canada and abroad.

Former UBC Faculty

Dr. John Borrows, O.C. (Professor at the University of Victoria, former associate professor and First Nations Legal Studies Director - since renamed Indigenous Legal Studies - at UBC's Allard School of Law)
For his scholarly work on Indigenous rights and legal traditions, which have had a significant impact across Canada and abroad.

The Honourable Lynn Smith, O.C., Q.C. (Former Dean of Allard School of Law)
For her extensive and pioneering contributions to the Canadian legal system as a lawyer, academic and judge.

Emeritus Faculty

Dr. Robert Krell, C.M. (Faculty of Medicine)
For his contributions to our understanding of mass ethnopolitical violence, and for his advocacy on behalf of Holocaust survivors.
