Award Details

The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded for: "Outstanding innovations or scientific discoveries, which in broad terms fall within the environmental field."

Since its inception in 1990 the Volvo Environment Prize has become one of the scientific world’s most respected environmental awards.

The Prize is awarded by an Independent Foundation hosted at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, an international research institute for global sustainability in Stockholm, Sweden. The selection process involves a call for nominations, a screening process by a Scientific Committee, and then an international Prize Jury chooses the successful candidate.

Laureates represent all fields of environmental and sustainability studies and initiatives. The two most important criteria are scientific excellence and contributions to decision-making and policy.

The Prize is awarded annually and consists of a hand-crafted diploma, a glass sculpture and a cash award of SEK 1.5 million (approximately Euro 135,000 or USD 140,000). The award ceremony is held in Stockholm or Gothenburg, Sweden in the fall of each year.
