The Seoul Peace Prize was established in 1990 to commemorate the success of the 24th Olympic Games held in Seoul, Korea, an event widely recognized for its historic contribution to global peace and harmony. The goal of the Seoul Peace Prize is to contribute to the further promotion of human harmony and world peace by identifying and encouraging individual(s) and organization(s) working in various fields to establish world peace.

The prize is awarded biennially, and the laureate receives a diploma, a plaque, and an honorarium of US$200,000. Distinguished figures and institutions at home and abroad are asked to nominate candidates for the prize. 

Nominees, as persons or organizations in being, should deserve indisputable recognition for their outstanding contribution in the following areas:

  • Maintenance or restoration of peace in a disputed region or the world at large 
  • Promotion of mutual understanding and reconciliation among peoples and nations 
  • Peace building through the advancement of human rights, democracy, international cooperation, anti-war and anti-nuclear/mass destructive weapons, feminism, environment, culture, sports, and science and technology. 
  • Human development projects or objectives
