Award Details

The Canada Gairdner Awards recognize and celebrate the work of the world’s best biomedical researchers. Over the past 53 years, Gairdner has gained a superb international reputation for its early recognition of medical breakthroughs that have changed the way medicine is practised.

Annually, seven awards are given:

  • five Canada Gairdner International Awards for biomedical research,
  • the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, specifically for impact on global health issues, and
  • the Canada Gairdner Wightman Award, reserved for a Canadian scientist showcasing scientific excellence and leadership. (Currently paused)

Each award is valued at $100,000.

Gairdner has also introduced a new mid-career Momentum Award.
